Contents

Here are Rob's Blog entries for June 2005.

Blog entries for other months can be found in the main blog index.

Glastonbury 2005 Roundup

Well I'm back from the 2005 Glastonbury Festival, so here's a quick roundup of the relevant links to various photos I posted from the festival.

The BBC are linking in from a piece on their news site, Blogs from the field, which features stories and images from other people blogging from Glastonbury 2005. There's also the official Q Glasto blog, written by the guys from Q4music.com who had to work the weekend while some of us were just there having a good time.

All the blog entries above were posted using either a Nokia 7610, or 3230 phone using Lifeblog directly from the festival.

Finally, here are a few other photos I took with my normal digital camera at the festival and have only just had the chance to upload.

Give It Some Wellie

So that's what becomes of all the abandoned wellies at the end of each Glastonbury

The Eavis's turn them into erotic art.

Flags And Blue Sky

The sky is blue, the sun is shining and the flags are blowing in a gentle cooking breeze.

If only it had been like this for all of Glastonbury.

Waiting For Coldplay

The Pyramid Stage is all lit, and the field is full of people waiting to see Coldplay.

Hope they are on soon. I cut short The Proclaimers to see them.

Wind Up Lifeblog

As my battery is all but dead on my phone, i've invested in a wind up phone charger from the alternative energy stand in Glastonbury's Green Fields.

It's a real killer on the arms after a while, but it means i can keep blogging for a while longer!

Chaz 'N' Dave At Glastonbury

I've just seen Chaz 'n' Dave at the Acoustic Tent, and they've easily been the best show of this years Glastonbury.

The tent was rammed full and massive crowds of fans jammed onto the hill outside.

The cheers and appreciation from the crowd was massive.

The only downside was a late start as Bob Geldof was somewhere on site and the show was delayed while he did a photoshoot or something with the crowds on one of the main stages.

Sun, Beer and Music

The sun is shining again, and i'm sitting outside the acoustic tent with a nice pint of real ale from the Red Flag ale tent nearby.

Time to move soon as i'd quite like to see The Thrills over at the Pyramid Stage in a bit.

Music At Last

We have some power now and The Undertones have taken to the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury.

It's raining again, and rumours are the BBC studio here is flooded and ticket holders arriving today are being turned away.

Wish You Were Here

As you can see, it's pissing down here at Glastonbury.

There are no artists playing, quite a bit of the site is underwater, and most the stalls are closed.

On the plus side, the sun has just started to peak through the clouds, and because there is so much surfice water, there isn't any mud... Yet!

At Glastonbury 2005

I've made it to Glastonbury 2005.

As you can see i'm moblogging live from the festival with Nokia's Lifeblog.

It's been a beautiful summers day and the sun is starting to set here at the stone circle.

The music starts tomorrow, so today i'm just looking around.

Solio Solar Charger

We're taking some of these very cool Solio solar phone and ipod chargers to Glastonbury.

What a great idea!

They fold out into the flower shape shown in the photo for charging, and fold back into a phone sized unit for storage. They charge an internal battery so you don't need to keep your ipod or phone plugged into it all day.

The company hopes they'll generate more energy than what was used to make them. Good luck to them!

Comverse Introduce Lifelog

Comverse are releasing a product called Lifelog that sounds very similar to Nokia's Lifeblog product.

Comverse, a unit of Comverse Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: CMVT), and the world’s leading supplier of software and systems enabling network-based multimedia enhanced communication services, announced today the availability of LifeLog, a network-based storage solution of mobile-oriented personal data. With LifeLog, subscribers can easily upload user-generated mobile content such as pictures, video clips, contacts and messages, to a network-based storage system, creating a personalized 'life log' that can be easily managed and shared. The end-to-end telco-grade solution ensures a secure personal multimedia user experience that is designed to enhance loyalty, and boost traffic.

Leveraging Comverse's expertise in providing comprehensive data and content solutions, LifeLog makes use of a device's native capabilities to provide subscribers with network storage, and easy, intuitive message and content management. LifeLog provides full sharing functionality, sending automatic notifications by email or SMS to pre-defined groups following the uploading of new content. With its ability to store all user information, such as contact lists, found on a mobile phone, LifeLog serves as insurance for lost or upgraded devices. LifeLog is easily integrated into Comverse's Open Services Environment, InSight, which provides a single, open, modular architecture for hosting a wide variety of multimodal advanced messaging and infotainment services.

"LifeLog enables subscribers to easily create a personal log of their lives anytime, anywhere, by offering a seamless synchronization experience between the mobile device and the PC," said Benny Einhorn, Chief Marketing Officer at Comverse. "With its ability to easily share multimedia content on the Web with friends and family, LifeLog is designed to strengthen the operator’s position in the value chain, increase service awareness, and further drive traffic and premium revenues for operators".

The difference between Lifeblog and Lifelog, apart from one letter in their names, is that Lifeblog allows the user to store date locally, where as Lifelog seems to force it onto the network. When it's on the network, it will tie the user down to that particular phone network as it could mean the loss of years worth of important data. I like the way Comverse describe this as enhanced loyalty. Also, being on the network means lots of juicy data charges to backup or access your data. However, it does mean that you don't need a PC to backup your data onto as you do when you use Nokia Lifeblog.

Perl Best Practices Book Due Soon

At last, O'Reilly are publishing a book on Perl Best Practices.

It's by that well known Perl guru Damian Conway so should be excellent.

It's out in August so not long to wait now.

Also due out soon is Simon Cozen's rewrite of Advanced Perl Programming. The original is excellent, but looking a bit dated now. I'm looking forward to seeing the new edition.

Live 8 SMS Ticket Lottery

The Live 8 show in London has had a record 2,060,285 text message entries for tickets over the last week. This makes it officially the world's largest text message lottery. 1.5 million of those entries came in the first 9 hours of the competition opening. O2, who ran the competition, said people entered an average of 1.62 times each.

There are only 75,000 pairs of tickets, so my one entry gives me about a 3% chance of winning a pair.

The text messages cost 1.50UKP so have managed to raise over 3 million pounds for charity. That's pretty good going, and a great use of premium SMS.

Live 8 confirmation txt message

The organisers are now repeating the exercise with 42,000 pairs of tickets for the Edinburgh concert.

Whatson.com - The Best In UK Commercial Radio

Whatson.com - Kerrang

I'm really pleased as I made the new Whatson.com site live today. It's the result of several months hard work by a small team, with me as the lead developer.

Currently it's the home for 8 radio players at present, with more to follow soon!

Kerrang Radio, Kerrang 105.2, Kiss 100 and Magic 105.4 contain a mix of live radio streams, the best of the weeks previous shows and some other special content.

The BBC has been doing something similar for a while with the BBC Radio Player, and ourselves with the Kiss player, but this a first for UK commercial radio.

All the players cross link to each other and we try to offer highlights from other stations to give visitors a real choice of listening.

Anyway, there's more to come, so keep tuned in.
